EUREKA, Ill. – A local case of monkeypox has been confirmed.
That’s according to the Woodford County Health Department. Officials call it a “probable” case in a single resident who otherwise wasn’t identified.
Testing, officials say, was completed through a private lab.
Officials say the case is so far isolated and there is no great risk of extensive local spread, but they do say contact tracing is being done, so they can determine who has been in contact with the person infected.
Monkeypox is still described rare but potentially serious, and can be spread through close physical contact, among other ways.
There are 771 cases of monkeypox in Illinois — most are in Chicago, but at least some have also been reported in Champaign County.
