PEORIA, Ill. — In the new year, Illinois’ House Republicans are offering a plan to draw up new legislative districts.
Every 10 years, new boundaries are drawn up based on Illinois’ latest Census data.
Republican Rep. Ryan Spain, of Peoria, told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show”, that the Legislature is currently awaiting results from last year’s Census.
He expects the information will be available within the next 4-6 weeks.
Spain said he’s seeking to make a few changes in Illinois state statute regarding the way the Legislature approaches the map-making process.
“Hopefully, to deny Mike Madigan of the tool which he is trying to use to get himself re-elected Speaker, by promising that he’ll rig the maps for people that support him,” Spain said.
Spain said Illinois now has a chance to draw up legislative districts that are more fair and balanced that will encourage people to work together for the common good.
“We can’t use partisanship as the primary basis for how we draw these legislative districts. And, that has been the magic trick for Mike Madigan for 50 years now,” Spain said.
Spain represents Illinois’ 73rd District which includes Bureau, Marshall, Peoria, Stark and Woodford counties.
The Illinois General Assembly begins its next session on Friday, Jan. 8.
