PEORIA, Ill. — When you’re hot, they’re hot.
Becky Spencer, with Peoria Animal Protective Services, says it’s that simple. On hot summer days, leave pets at home where they’ll stay cool.
She says in a matter of 10 minutes, the interior of your car can turn into a deadly sauna for pets, even it 80 degree weather.
“So, when it’s hot out, limit outside exercise, not keeping them outside for too long. If you have to do outside exercise because you have a high-energy breed, do that in the early morning or later in the evening, the cooler part of the day,” Spencer says.
She also suggests making “puppy popsicles” by filling ice cube trays or popsicle molds with treats and water to keep dogs cool in heat.
In the heat, all pets should have access to cool, fresh water and shade.
Spencer says if you notice your dog or cat constantly drinking water, they may have a medical situation. She suggests calling your veterinarian to rule out any problems.
