PEORIA, Ill. — In preparation of the winter weather expected this week, Peoria Public Works have had trucks out since Sunday night pre-treating the roads.
With snow expected during the day Tuesday and switching over to freezing rain and sleet in the overnight hours, Peoria Public Works Operations Deputy Director Sie Maroon said the timing of the two storms this week presents some challenges.
He said it’s tough to decide whether or not to keep workers on 12-hour shifts between Wednesday and Thursday before the next snow system arrives in the area.
News partner 25 News Chief Meterologist Chuck Collins said a combination of freezing rain and snow will be in the area on the night of New Year’s Eve.
“Right now, we aren’t attacking it any different,” said Maroon. “We’re attacking it just like any other storm.
“We’re going to stay on the routes until we can absolutely come off.”
Public works crews have pre-treated all main roads, including hills and overpasses, ahead of the snow storms.
“[Pre-treating] on the front end of the storm does give us a bit of a cushion,” said Maroon. “We’ve got 157 miles of main arterial streets that we cover, so it takes awhile.”
Maroon said they can hopefully come off the routes Wednesday night for a “breather” before Friday.
