PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s top cop says reports of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the River City are not true.
Police Chief Eric Echevarria says the department received reports Tuesday of ICE reportedly in an alley in the Warehouse District on SW Washington.
He says what took place in the area was scheduled training between the Peoria Area Federal Firearms Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Echevarria says ICE was not part of the training, and that the Illinois TRUST Act prohibits local law enforcement agencies from participating in federal immigration enforcement operations.
He says in the future, the department will provide advanced notice of police training that occurs outside of the police department.
