PEORIA, Ill. – Dream Center Peoria is launching an emergency relief effort to help families worried about having enough food on the table.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits from the federal government are expected to cease on November 1.
Dream Center Peoria Executive Director Andy King tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” they’ve received a lot of calls and requests for assistance since it was announced the government will be ending food assistance programs at the end of the month.
Starting November 4, Dream Center Peoria will be teaming up with several local churches as drop-off sites for non-perishable food, toiletry and hygiene items.
On Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-noon, items can be dropped off at Northwoods Community Church on N. Allen Road in Peoria.
On Wednesdays, you can drop off items at RockChurch on Upper Spring Bay Road in East Peoria from 10 a.m.-noon.
On Thursdays, items can be dropped off at New Life Christian Church on W. Edgewood Court in Morton from 10 a.m.-noon.
Non-perishable items can also be delivered to Dream Center Peoria, at 714 Hamilton Boulevard, Tuesday-Thursday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., or you can call Dream Center to arrange a pick up.
King says Dream Center Peoria will assess the amount of donated food and personal items and hopefully have a weekly distribution day for the community.
King says the food distributions will be temporary, as a way to help people get through without SNAP benefits.
“Our mission is to “impact families living in poverty…starting with kids and youth,” and from the very beginning, we have looked to “find a need and fill it,” he says. “This is another example of our commitment to give dignity and hope in ways that are practical and life-sustaining.”
