TREMONT, Ill. – A World War Two veteran from Tazewell County has passed away.
William Elliott, Junior of Tremont died this week just days before his birthday at the age of 103. He was in an artillery unit during the war, then moved to Central Illinois to work for Caterpillar for 37 years.
His son, Tim, tells 25 News that his father’s service inspired him to enlist.
“He spent most of his time in Germany chasing Hitler all over the place. He got out in about 1945. I think it’s great. It’s probably one of the reasons that I got in,” Tim said.
William was part of an event recognizing World War II veterans last year in Morton. He was honored in 2023 at an assembly at Tremont Grade School.
William will be buried with military rites.
