WASHINGTON, Ill. – A new state historical marker in Washington marks a visit from the 16th President of the United States.
25 News reports a ceremony took place Saturday on the city square to mark a visit by Abraham Lincoln in 1858 during a US Senate campaign that he eventually lost to Stephen Douglas.
Tazewell County Clerk says he worked with the Illinois State Historical Society for six months to get a marker ready, and says connections to Lincoln make central Illinois special.
“Others desperately want to have some connection to Abraham Lincoln. We don’t need to be so desperate, it’s embedded in our communities, it’s all around us, we just need to take a look and find it,” Ackerman said.
Saturday’s dedication featured a temporary marker, with a more permanent marker likely to go up by next week.
