PEORIA, Ill. – EPIC is looking to give extra help to a “one stop shop” for those with disabilities seeking jobs in central Illinois.
The organization cut the ribbon on Thursday on its new career center. The center features new, adaptive technology for those with disabilities that includes different keyboards, mouses, text-to-type, and voice recognition technology.
Senior Vice President Doris Hayes says it can help develop skills such as building a resume, filling out job applications, and even building a brand.
“We have found that people don’t always have that technology at home, and so we wanted to be able to have a place for them to come and be able to build those work skills,” Hayes said.
The center focuses on aspects such as career coaching, individual career plans, workshops, skill development, and job placement assistance.
Inside the career center is the Practical Assessment Exploration System, which gives people simulated on-the-job training for whatever career they want to seek.
Hayes says EPIC is working with more than 100 people in helping develop job skills. She says the upgrades cost around $170,000 in total.
