PEORIA, Ill. – The fate of one of Peoria’s pools could be decided soon by the two bodies that co-own it.
Boards for the Peoria Public School and Peoria Park Districts jointly met Thursday night to discuss what to do with Central Park Pool.
The facility has been open since 1968 and is in need of repairs that include new filter tanks and structural repairs. The facility is currently being used by the Peoria Area Water Wizards, but the group gave notice that it would terminate its lease next month.
No action was taken at Thursday night’s meeting, but three potential options were discussed; PPS would purchase the building, sell the building to a private entity, or demolish the building.
PPS Board President Dr. Gregory Wilson says he personally is in favor of the first idea, but says it’s too early in the process to pin down one preferred option. Wilson says the pool can be revived under the school district’s ownership, similar to what happened at Peoria Stadium.
“With the right amount of community effort, community support, support from our local state elected officials, from the board members, we can really rally around this building,” Wilson said.
Wilson says he does not want to see the property become dormant and unusable outside of PPS ownership.
Wilson says the board will discuss what to do with the pool at its September 8th meeting.
