BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – This school year is the 125th in the history of the Illinois High School Association.
The IHSA is celebrating by highlighting on its website the top 125 moments in its history.
The key figure in putting this together is IHSA historian Scott Johnson, who was on the IHSA staff from 2001 until his retirement in 2019.
“It’s obviously difficult to whittle down 125 years of history into 125 moments,” Johnson said on a news release posted on the IHSA website. “The IHSA boasts trailblazing events, legendary coaches and athletes, and transcendent moments that helped shape high school sports and activities not only here in Illinois, but around the country. We tried to cultivate a mixture of people, events, and performances that encompass the rich history of Illinois high school sports and activities.”
The website is currently highlighting the original 27 members of the IHSA in 1905, Red Grange who is the first of 29 Illinois personalities that have been inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame who will be featured, the “Rolling of the Peas” to determine boy state basketball state finals matchups, and the IHSA’s move from Chicago to Bloomington in 1974.
The 125 moments will be released throughout the school year HERE.
