PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s Police chief has clarified timing regarding the release of information relating to Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting.
The incident in Peoria’s East Bluff killed 41-year-old Brandon Lewis, after police say he allegedly swung a wooden bat at officers and hit one of them.
Police Chief Eric Echevarria says Illinois State Police advised his department of a new policy regarding governing investigations.
He says agencies requesting state police involvement must sign an official form that explicitly states ISP will take the lead on public and media communications, and was the first time the protocol was presented to Peoria Police.
Echevarria says because of the policy, Peoria Police was unable to release any information without ISP approval. He says approval was given at 10:19 P.M., with a statement on the incident from Peoria Police released right after.
Peoria Police also released the names of the two police officers involved in the incident, Officer Veronica Orozco and Officer Da’Monte Williams. Echevarria says both are on critical incident leave due to the incident.
