PEORIA, Ill. – There’s a new resident of the Peoria Zoo.
The Zoo announced on Thursday the birth of a new infant mandrill monkey.
The baby was born on July 30th to mother Kofola and father Linus. It’s the second baby for the pair after the birth of their daughter, River, on August 19th, 2023.
Zoo Director Max Lakes says they’re giving mother and baby plenty of space to bond, but the baby’s gender has not been confirmed yet.
The zoo says the birth is significant for conservation efforts, as mandrills are listed as a vulnerable species in the wild due to habitat loss and hunting.
