PEORIA, Ill. – They’re not planning to shut down, but Peoria’s public television station says they will need some help.
On Friday, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced that it will cease operations by January of next year, with numerous layoffs planned for September. The announcement came after funding to the CPB was rescinded by Congress.
In a statement, WTVP CEO and President Jenn Gordon says the closure “underscores the uncertainty of the future” of federal funding for public broadcasting stations.
Gordon says it is asking the community to help fill that gap, which has previously been estimated at around $1 million per year.
