PEORIA, Ill. – A central Illinois Congressman is blasting one aspect of Medicaid cuts signed into law earlier this month.
One Medicaid provision in President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill implements work requirements for able-bodied
17th District Congressman Eric Sorensen (D-Moline), who visited Peoria on Thursday to tour OSF Children’s Hospital, says work requirements would make it a “litmus test” for people to get needed healthcare.
“It’s every month the Republicans in Congress say ‘We’re going to have people fill out a 20 page form every month,’” Sorensen said. “There are tens of thousands of people in our district in Illinois’ 17th who can’t read it.”
Sorensen says the work requirements would add more red tape to get people the health care they need.
Sorensen also pushed back against Republicans’ claim that changes to Medicaid would get able-bodied people off the system, saying the constituents he hears from are cancer patients concerned about where they’re going to get care from.
It was not the only concern he brought up about Medicaid cuts during his Peoria stop. Sorensen says people losing access to Medicaid could cut them off from the ability to get healthcare. He also says Medicaid cuts could affect the ability of hospitals to keep their doors open and people employed.
