PEORIA, Ill. – Teenagers in town all this week for Mission Peoria are helping the Dream Center fill backpacks with everything students need to start the school year off right.
The Dream Center’s Andy King this is the 24th year of Backpack Peoria.
“We will have 2,000 backpacks that are loaded with school supplies, and 800 of them will be clear backpacks,” King says.
With Peoria Public Schools middle and high school students needing clear backpacks this year, King expects that they’ll go fast.
In years past, families have shown up for Backpack Peoria as early at 4:30 a.m. King suggests getting in line Saturday morning no later than 7:30. The event kicks off at 9 a.m.
Students will also have access to medical exams, hair cuts and resources from a number of community organizations.
“We were just trying to take some of those obstacles out of the way that may be stopping a child from starting school well that first day,” King says.
