PEORIA, Ill. – There’s a new place for central Illinois kids to cool down as the dog days of summer arrive.
The Peoria Park District cut the ribbon Tuesday morning on Lakeview Park’s new splash pad while summer camp kids played in the streams of water.
The splash pad replaces the Lakeview Family Aquatic Center that was shuttered due to low attendance and mounting repairs. The park district’s Executive Director Emily Cahill says an area for kids to splash around and have fun was missed at Lakeview.
“Our goal is to bring vibrant, recreational activities to our community, and to be able to do this in a way that people can access without having to pay an admission fee, or having to spend their hard earned dollars in times that are getting tighter, is something that means a lot to the Park District,” Cahill said.
The splash pad is open daily from 11:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M., with operational dates from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
In addition to the water features, the splash pad features covered benches and picnic tables, as well as a larger outdoor restroom. The total cost of the project was just over $1 million, with Cahill saying about half of the amount was funded through state grants.
