PEORIA, Ill. – A man has been found guilty for the death of a 28-year-old man two years ago in a South Peoria hit-and-run accident.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 41-year-old John Timothy Junior was found guilty Thursday of Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Involving a Death.
The crash killed Akeem Alexander in the early morning hours of August 28th, 2023, in the area of Howett and Western.
Alexander was found lying unresponsive and face down in the road with a damaged bicycle nearby and pronounced dead at the scene.
Prosecutors say Timothy’s Land Rover detection service indicated a crash occurred in the area, but was not on the scene when police arrived. Car parts, including the Land Rover logo, were found scattered in the roadway.
The Land Rover was later found on Antoinette was heavy-front end damage that included a smashed in hood, leaking fluid, and paint colors that matched Alexander’s bicycle.
Timothy claimed his Land Rover was stolen, but surveillance footage revealed Timothy running a red light at a high-rate of speed, plowing into Alexander, and drove off without stopping.
Timothy is scheduled to be sentenced September 17th.
