PEKIN, Ill. – While most people should be prepared for emergency situations such as weather or natural disasters, how everyone approaches it may be different.
A presentation held Friday in Pekin between Ameren and the American Red Cross helped inform senior citizens about how to best prepare for the worst.
Ameren’s Adam Crank says one challenge senior citizens face is to be informed about when events are coming or happening.
“Perhaps an older generation isn’t as tech-literate. So we’re trying to give them ways to tune in and keep track of updates,” Crank said.
Those in attendance at the presentation received weather radios to help inform them of severe weather events.
Crank says mobility issues can be another challenge that senior citizens face when dealing with an emergency situation.
And he says emergency plans made out by anyone should include involving older people in their lives.
“Check up on your grandparents, check up on your parents, keep them in mind when you’re trying to keep everything together and you’re trying to develop a plan, definitely include them in your plan,” Crank said.
Crank says that includes having a way to contact them, even if that includes visiting their house before or during a disaster.
