PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s Duck Race, benefitting the Center for Prevention of Abuse, is the longest-running race of its kind in the nation.
The Center’s Carol Merna says there’ll be 35,000 ducks competing in Saturday’s race…celebrating the event’s 35th year, at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria.
100% of the money raised through the duck sales goes toward the Center’s abuse prevention programming.
“So that means that we’re taking care of survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, elder abuse, abuse of older adults with living with disabilities, and certainly human trafficking. We’ve got an amazing prevention education department that tries to stop abuse before it starts…and last year, they reached 41,000 students,” Merna says.
At last check on Friday, there were only a few hundred ducks still up for “adoption”.
“Go to duckrace.com/peoria, it’s gonna take you about three minutes to go through the whole process…one (duck) will win you a prize, if you get the lucky duck, the fastest duck in the truck as I say. Very popular packages are five, because you get one free, twelve, because you get two free and so on,” Merna says.
The top prize is $10,000, but there are many other prizes you can win.
