SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Drinking and hot weather do not mix.
That’s the warning from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. Even though the weather in Peoria isn’t as hot for the next couple days as it was most of last week, alcohol can end up making you feel more dehydrated, since it’s a diuretic.
“The general rule of thumb is for every alcoholic beverage you have, you should drink a cup of water or glass of water,” said Lisa Gardner, Executive Director, Illinois Liquor Control Commission. “I would go a step further to say that if the weather is extremely hot like it’s been lately, to increase that to two cups of water. It’s a lot easier to stay hydrated than to get dehydrated, and you’re at risk for severe medical issues.”
If you end up feeling dizzy or sick, Gardner says, get out of the sun, rest, and keep drinking water.
