MAQUON, Ill. – Two Knox County residents lost body parts after a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July.
The Knox County Sheriffs Department says it happened just before 2:00 p.m. Tuesday on Bridgeport Road in rural Maquon, north and west of Peoria, and along the Spoon River.
Officials say one of two people had set off a fireworks mortar, and both had to be life-flighted to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, and had to have either a hand or fingers amputated.
The victims were otherwise unidentified, except for being a 22-year-old rural Maquon resident, and a 21-year-old Galesburg resident.
An investigation, deputies say, is continuing.
