PEKIN, Ill. – A rental home in Pekin that was heavily damaged during one of the rounds of severe weather that swept the area in April is now officially destroyed.
That’s according to Pekin Police Chief John Dossey, also the city’s Interim City Manager.
The severe weather April 20th damaged a home on Caroline Street — a home that its owner and a tenant both claim had been an issue with the city for years.
The city learned Wednesday that the roof of the home was collapsing and the walls were pushing out — this, despite a city order post-storm requiring the owner to take immediate action to fix it.
Pekin firefighters and city officials determined the home was in an “active state of collapse,” and had to be demolished immediately.
That happened Thursday — after the tenant was helped through the home to get his property out safely.
Dossey says the city is committed to the community’s safety, and will keep working with the property owner and tenant.
