SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Law enforcement statewide are kicking off the “Click It Or Ticket” campaign for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The campaign includes increased patrols all across Illinois, with officers looking for speeders, drunk drivers and those not buckled up.
“The Memorial Day weekend is a great time, it’s the unofficial start of summer…we want people to have fun, enjoy family and friends and everything, but don’t speed, don’t drive distracted and buckle up,” says Illinois Department of Transportation Spokeperson Paul Wappel.
Wappel says over the past two years in Illinois, nearly 2,500 people died in traffic crashes. More than 60% were not buckled up properly.
I-DOT says heavy traffic during Memorial Day weekend almost always leads to an increase in fatalities. Last year in Illinois, there were 14 crashes over the holiday weekend, resulting in 15 deaths.
