PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria once again makes a “special delivery” to those in need.
The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive last weekend collected 67,000 pounds of food for the Peoria Area Food Bank in the effort where food is collected at your doorstep or mailbox by letter carriers and volunteers.
“It makes for a very physically challenging day,” said Scott Haney, letter carrier, to 25 News. “Besides doing the physical work of delivering the mail, we’re also physically picking up hundreds of pounds of food per route. At the end of the day, we’re tired. But it’s a good tired.”
Thanks to volunteers from Caterpillar at the food bank, the donations were able to be packaged up and ready to go out quickly, because of the growing community need.
“Packaging up the food now that we received last Saturday is so important and very timely,” said Wayne Cannon, food bank manager, to 25 News. “When you need food, you need food today. So this is definitely going to help.”
Cannon says the donations could help make an estimated 70,000 meals in the area.
