PEORIA, Ill. – New technology is available in ambulances in Peoria that will allow them to control traffic signals when they’re on emergency calls.
Advanced Medical Transport vehicles are equipped with a switch thanks to the Peoria Fire Department that allows them to turn lights green at otherwise dangerous intersections, and will also turn on flashing lights on top of the signals, that warn other drivers.
Young Sophia Richards of “Sophia Salutes First Responders” on Facebook likes that.
“Pull to the right if you see sirens and lights. Don’t panic if you see a first responder pass by,” said Richards, to 25 News.
While many motorists slow down, state law requires you to slow down and pull over for any emergency vehicle with its lights on.
“Don’t race ahead so the first responder can pass by, otherwise if you don’t slow down or pull to the right, then people can get hurt or die,” said Richards.
AMT says they plan to spend more money to expand the traffic signal capability.
