PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins is sounding a warning for car owners in general in the county — but, specifically, for those who own Kias or Hyundais.
Watkins, on social media, says over two hundred cars throughout the county have been stolen in less than two months.
He says many cars had their keys in them when they were stolen.
But, Watkins says what he calls a “Tik Tok trend” of 2015 to 2021 Kia and Hyundai sedans are being taken using a USB cable.
Watkins says there is a software update available that Kia and Hyundai dealerships should be able to help you with if you call them and schedule an appointment — specifically, the Mike Miller dealerships in Peoria.
He says otherwise, don’t leave your keys in your car, and consider buying something like “The Club” or an Air Tag.
