PEORIA, Ill. – Not everyone is fortunate to have shelter during this week’s winter storm, but a local group is working to try and get everyone inside.
Major Heath Sells appeared on the Greg and Dan Show to talk about what options are available to everyone.
He said it’s important to get people inside because of how bad the storm could be.
“The harsh reality for many of our friends right here in the Tri-Counties is this winter storm that’s coming in isn’t about comfort, it’s life-threatening,” Sells said.
A Winter Storm Watch was upgraded to a Warning on Wednesday. The National Weather Service on Wednesday is forecasting 3″ to 5″ of snow to fall on Thursday, with winds gusting as high as 50 MPH. That’s forecasted to be followed on Friday with wind chills as low as -35.
Sells said another option people can use to help get everyone inside is by calling 211 to find out what resources are available to those in need.
“They will make sure that anyone who’s in need of shelter, whether it’s just during the day to drop in to make sure they have a safe place, or overnight shelter,” Sells said.
Sells said his organization will help anyone that they can get inside their buildings.
Other warming center options in Peoria were announced by the city on Tuesday. The police station on southwest Adams Street is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M., and all city fire stations are open from 7:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M.
