PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man will spend the next 12 years in a federal prison after being sentenced on Friday.
33-year-old Daryl McGhee was convicted in two separate trials on drug trafficking and weapons offenses. The first trial occurred in February 2021 and August of this year.
Authorities at the sentencing hearing presented evidence of what led to McGhee’s arrest. Peoria Police responded to McGhee’s residence in the early morning hours of February 13th, 2021 to a domestic violence call. McGhee then left the residence on foot in bitter-cold temperatures, and was found several blocks away in a bush.
A K-9 unit then searched the area where McGhee was found and discovered a satchel near a dumpster that McGhee’s footprints were near. The satchel contained 140 grams of cocaine and a loaded handgun with 17 rounds of ammunition.
Evidence of McGhee’s social media posts were also presented at the hearing. That included a photo of the satchel and a video of McGhee brandishing the handgun.
McGhee could have faced up to 45 years in prison on all charges, along with a $2,000,000 fine.
U.S. District Judge Joe Billy McDade at the hearing found that McGhee’s actions showed a lack of self-control and disrespect for the law and other people.
