UPDATED 10:06 P.M.
PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police are investigating a fatal car-versus-pedestrian accident downtown outside the Peoria Civic Center.
Police closed the area of Jefferson Street from Fulton to Liberty around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday as the Bradley Braves men’s basketball team was getting ready to play Northern Iowa in Carver Arena, with numerous squad cars and Peoria Fire equipment on the scene.
Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria confirms an elderly female with a walker was struck by a vehicle later located near the scene, and pronounced dead at the scene. Police say an SUV was travelling southbound on Jefferson near Liberty as the pedestrian was crossing the street, and struck her, but stopped after doing so.
Parking attendants tell WMBD they saw what appeared to be a car traveling at a high rate of speed through the area while two others had stopped prior to the accident.
Further details about the victim will be released at a later time by the Peoria County Coroner.
Police say the crash remains under investigation.
Jefferson remained closed for about three hours after the accident.
