PEORIA, Ill. – There are still some local teams in the Illinois High School Association football playoffs. And Peoria is among them.
The third-ranked Peoria High Lions in Class 5A are taking on fourth-ranked Morris at home Saturday. The winner goes on to the 5A championship game at the University of Illinois next Saturday.
“They’ve done a tremendous job of really attacking one game a time,” said Tim Thornton, Lions head coach, on WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show. “I think they’ve just enjoyed the process of getting better. They come in every week, and can’t wait to find out what they’ve got to improve on and what they did wrong.”
They’ve not done much wrong this season, as they’ve only lost one game, and have an 11-1 record.
Thornton says, though, Morris might be a difficult foe.
“They’ve played a grueling schedule, so they’re going to be well battle-tested,” said Thornton. “They’ve got a really good linebacker on the other side of the ball that I think has committed to Northern Iowa. They’ve got a big, tough offensive line up front that likes to play just kind of your old school mean, nasty football.”
Saturday’s game starts at 2:00 p.m. at Peoria Stadium.
