PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria City Council members are among those reacting to the fight Friday night that led to a false call of shots being fired at a Peoria High football game.
The game between the Lions and Metamora was stopped late in the second quarter following a fight, then district School Resource Officers hitting their batons on the new metal bleachers, causing people to panic and leave.
District Four Council Member Andre Allen said on social media what should have been, in his words, a “monumental moment” between two local football powerhouses became “traumatic and dangerous.”
“We must continue to work with our youth and teach them that violence is never the answer and that participating in it has consequences,” said Allen, on social media. “Our community deserves better and will do better!”
Second District City Councilman Chuck Grayeb said on social media he believes “a few bad apples” caused the game to be cancelled.
“As a proud alumnus of PHS and City Councilman for the Peoria High Region, I can assure you that this behavior is not representative of the Peoria High student body,” said Grayeb. “We apologize!”
Metamora later chose to forfeit the game rather than continue.
