SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — With the threat of severe weather still lingering this week, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, or I-EMA, is reminding people to check the forecast before they go out, and to pay attention to any weather watches or warnings.
I-EMA Spokesperson Kevin Sur said flash flooding can be particularly dangerous.
“It comes out of nowhere, it’s hard to predict…and, along with that and severe weather, it’s also hard to see. In the daytime, it’s easier to see flooded roadways or washed out drives, however at night it’s almost impossible to see, especially if you’re traveling at a high rate of speed,” Sur said.
Sur said you should never try to cross a flooded road, since it only takes about six inches of water to wash away you or your car.
Sur also advises having an emergency kit at home and in the car in case of severe weather, and to include family pets in any preparedness efforts.
