PEORIA, Ill. – The grade structure is changing in Peoria Public Schools.
“We feel like we have tweaked a few things. We didn’t do a wholesale change. But, we adjusted some things that really seemed like they weren’t working as well from 2018,” said Dr. Sandra Wilson, PPS Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
In one part of the newly-revised policy, students can receive “zeros” on tests, presentations, and the like if it’s believed that person didn’t try. Wilson says in many cases the work may be able to be re-done. In other cases, there will still be a minimum 40 percent grade that must be given.
Also as part of the changes, Wilson says the way teachers grade is changing, from semester grades, to quarterly grades.
“What we realized is some students got very frustrated that they had a slow start,” said Wilson. “They kicked it into gear at about October. They really had themselves kind of in a deep hole.”
The recommendations were made by parent surveys and with the help of a committee, and take effect in the fall. The district is expect to communicate the details more to parents over the summer.
