PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria native is working nationally to try and combat gun violence impacting children, among other areas.
Doctor David Nayak now practices in the Chicago area, but founded “Strength to Love.” He was on hand a few days ago when Governor JB Pritzker came to Peoria to sign several pieces of anti-violence legislation.
“Many times families rely on crowd-sourcing and church donations to help pay for their child’s funeral and their burials,” said Nayak. “The Strength to Love Foundation has assisted families who lost their children to gun violence by paying for their funeral and burial costs.”
Among the legislation Pritzker signed was a measure that allows families to be given money right away for funeral costs, as opposed to previous policy of waiting to be reiumbursed by the state.
“Direct payments to service providers will help alleviate the pain families are experiencing with this financial hardship,” said Nayak.
Nayak says families shouldn’t have to worry about paying for a child’s funeral — the costs of which will only get worse, he says, with inflation.
