FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — Illinois Gov. J-B Pritzker is calling on federal lawmakers to protect women’s right to choose.
The U.S. Senate is voting on Wednesday on codifying the landmark Roe v. Wade court case.
“The nation is on the precipice of eliminating a federal right that has been the law of the land for 50 years. It’s shameful and wrong,” Pritzker said.
The Senate vote follows the publication of a leaked Supreme Court draft document suggesting the court plans to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Pritzker reiterates that Illinois is a pro-choice state, and as long as he’s governor, and Illinois retains a pro-choice legislature, abortion will be legal and protected here.
“People should not have to endure trauma after trauma, to be in control of their own bodies. But, that’s exactly the burden that this right-wing Supreme Court and anti-choice governors and state legislatures increasingly put on the backs of millions of women,” Pritzker said.
Early in his term in office, Gov. Pritzker signed the Reproductive Health Act, protecting Illinois women in anticipation of a conservative Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.
Pritzker also last year repealed the Parental Notification Act, ensuring pregnant minors could choose whether or not to involve their parents or legal guardians in their decision to have an abortion.
