PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria’s Susan G. Komen “More than Pink Walk” is back on Saturday, Mother’s Day.
Memorial Affiliate Executive Director Gayle Young said the event has morphed over the years from a race, into something everyone can participate in.
“We wanted the focus to be more on survivors, more the work that’s being done. And, also an opportunity to remember those who we have lost,” Young said.
There was a small “More Than Pink” walk last fall in Peoria, but Young said this is the event they’ve been waiting for.
The walk, the 33rd Komen event in Peoria, kicks off Saturday around 8 a.m., with special recognition of local breast cancer survivors.
“I would guess probably 500 or 600 (survivors) are registered currently,” Young said.
Many survivors walk each year to document how many years they’ve been cancer-free.
The Komen Memorial Affiliate hopes to raise at least $250,000.
“It will go to research, that research we’re doing for metastatic breast cancer…that’s our real focus right now. It’s the cancer that takes women’s lives,” Young said.
Funds from the “More Than Pink Walk” will also go to Komen’s advocacy work and patient navigation services.
The walk route begins at Metro Centre off N. University, and hasn’t changed.
“We’ll go out from Metro onto Glen, and then into the neighborhoods. And, it is only a one-mile walk, but you can walk as many times as you want,” Young said.
Drivers should expect some delays near the walk route Saturday morning.
CityLink will again be providing shuttle service to and from Metro Centre, starting at 6:15 a.m.
There’s still time to get involved, whether that’s donating to the cause, or registering to walk.
Peoria’s “More Than Pink Walk” kicks off Saturday morning at 8:00.
