WASHINGTON, D.C. – He says he wants to protect the “sanctity of Life,” but Congressman Darin LaHood says he’s troubled by how most of America found out about how the Supreme Court may feel on the issue.
LaHood says the leak of a draft opinion of a case that could effectively overturn “Roe Versus Wade” is “unprecedented,” and, “an attack on the independence of the Supreme Court.”
He alleges that people like President Joe Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are using the leak to continue to continue a campaign of intimidating federal judges and politicize the Supreme Court.
That said, LaHood says he thinks the high court should revisit Roe V. Wade, now that the draft opinion in Dobbs versus Jackson Women’s Health Organization is out.
Meanwile, a statement from Rep. Cheri Bustos doesn’t address the leaking of the Supreme Court draft opinion, but does express concern about the legal precenent being set, and potentially being undone.
Bustos’ statement says if made official, the decision, “…would represent a radical departure from longstanding protections of personal freedom and bodily autonomy.”
“Personal medical decisions should be made between a patient and her doctor,” said Bustos.
“The unprecedented leak of Justice Alito’s reported draft opinion is an attack on the independence of the Supreme Court – a separate and equal branch of our government. Leaders should be defending the Court, but President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, and Governor Pritzker’s statements continue to play into the radical Left’s long-running campaign to intimidate federal judges and politicize the Supreme Court. These efforts to undermine the rule of law, judicial independence, and the Constitution must not be allowed to prevail.
“As a father of three and a staunch Pro-Life advocate, I believe that the Supreme Court should reconsider Roe and that states should be empowered to enact Pro-Life protections for the unborn. Democrats in Illinois and Congress continue to advocate for an extreme abortion agenda which includes late-term and taxpayer-funded abortion, restrictions on conscience protections, and limits on parental involvement.
“I remain committed to upholding the sanctity of Life and will continue to fight for the voiceless in Congress.” — Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap)
“In America, we don’t allow the government to come into our home and force a decision on us and our family. Yet that’s exactly what this draft opinion prepares to do.
“Personal medical decisions should be made between a patient and her doctor, not by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“If the Court formally adopts the leaked draft opinion, it would represent a radical departure from longstanding protections of personal freedom and bodily autonomy.” — Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-East Moline)
