PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria County has new voting machines that will get their first use during the June primary election.
And Friday, the county’s Election Commission was showing them off — and the return to a paper-based voting system.
“That’s only because there is no system on the market right now that meets federal requirements,” said Elizabeth Gannon, Assistant Executive Director. “So, we knew that a paper-based system was the direction that we needed to go.
Gannon says the commission also wanted something where every ballot looked the same, no matter how you vote.
The system will easily also count the ballots, and is secure, so Gannon says there is no concern over election system irregularities.
“I think it’s important for everyone to know that the voting equipment is never attached to the Internet — not during the building of the ballot, the voting process, or the tabulation,” said Gannon. “It never touches the Internet.”
Gannon says if you make a mistake on a ballot, yes, you can get a new one, and when you turn it in, the system will tell you what, if anything, is wrong.
