PEORIA, Ill. — Spring and summer months mean a full house at Peoria County’s animal shelter.
PCAPS Director Becky Spencer said that’s especially true because they are an open admission shelter.
“We don’t close our doors and say we’re full. We work to take in all the animals that need a place to go,” Spencer said.
To find more homes for all those the pets, PCAPS is participating again this year in the “Empty the Shelters” event May 2-7 with free adoptions.
The adoption fees are being waived thanks to a donation from the Bissell Pet Foundation.
“Certainly there are just thousands and thousands of animals across the country that a need home, and that’s no different here in Peoria,” Spencer said.
PCAPS is one of 275 shelters nationwide participating in “Empty the Shelters”.
With an influx of cats, dogs and other pets in the spring and summer, it’s the perfect time to adopt, according to Spencer.
“We currently have about 23 dogs, about 30 cats, a whole lot of guinea pigs and some parakeets even that are looking for a home right now,” Spencer added.
