PEKIN, Ill. – A Pekin man continues what, for him, is an Easter-time tradition.
Paul Helmig, 69, continued his recreation of Jesus carrying the cross prior to His death. Helmig walked down Court Street in Pekin Friday, dressed as the Son of God, carrying a crown of thorns, using face paint to depict blood.
“I’ll carry the cross. I’ll be crying. I’ll be praying the whole way,” said Helmig, to 25 News. “Almost every year I find out it was done for a special person. Somebody will come up, and it will know that it was a special person that it touched and changed their life.”
Starting at Bridgeway Church, it took Helmig four hours to complete the journey.
