SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency wants residents to know about opportunities this spring to get rid of household hazardous waste products.
The one-day collections, including one in Peoria, will accept things like chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, paint thinner, antifreeze and motor oil.
Items that won’t be accepted include latex paint, propane tanks and smoke detectors.
I-EPA Spokesperson Kim Biggs has some advice on how to get the items to the collection sites.
“In order to keep those involved safe, and residents safe as well, we do recommend that they store the items in the trunk of their vehicle, they don’t have to get out of their vehicle to come on-site. They simply need to keep like chemicals together, and secure any lids to make sure they don’t spill during transport,” Biggs said.
Additional collection sites include: Champaign, Mattoon, Ottawa, Carbondale, Macomb, Mount Carroll, Taylorville and Crystal Lake.
