WASHINGTON, D.C. – If you think the price of gas is way too high, despite the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, one of Illinois’s Senators says she has your back.
Illinois Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth says she’s introducing what she calls the “Gas Price Gouging Prevention Act.”
“[The bill would be] making it a federal crime during a period of an international crisis affecting the oil markets, to sell oil at a price that it unconscionably excessive, and indicates the seller is taking unfair advantage of the circumstances related to an international crisis to increase prices unreasonably,” said Duckworth (D-IL) at a recent Senate committee hearing.
Duckworth wants the feds to investigate price gouging in the meantime, calling on the White House and Attorney General Merrick Garland to form a task force on the matter.
Meanwhile, Duckworth says there is another measure she’s working with a nearby Senator on, that would also be good for agriculture.
“Saving families money at the pump is also why I joined forces with my Republican colleague, Senator (Joni) Ernst, to introduce the ‘Homefront Energy Independence Act,’ that will incentivize bio-fuel production, and allow for the year-round sale of E-15 fuel.”
Duckworth says that could save drivers as much as 50 cents a gallon, and the fuel has been certified for use in cars from 2001 or newer.
She says protecting American families from corporate greed should be a bi-partisan issue.
