PEORIA, Ill. – A pair of Peoria-area residents are behind an upcoming fundraiser that will help battered women in Kenya.
Veronicah and Terry Richards want to build the “Imani Rescue Center” in Vernicah’s native Kenya.
“Put yourself in the shoes of a woman who lives so far out of the village, she barely has any phone signal let alone a cell phone,” said Veronicah Richards. “She’s in an abusive relationship. She’s been beat every other day or once a week or however many times, and she literally has nowhere to go.”
Veronicah Richards tells WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show” in other words, it’s more difficult to get help recovering from an abusive relationship there, than it might be here.
Richards says the first step in building that shelter near her home area, is getting water to the site.
“Our goal is to try to make the center as self-sufficient as possible,” said Richards. “And, number one, is to draw a well. We want to be able to have fresh water that we can provide fresh water for the community for free, plus be able to supply it for the center. So we are in the process of at least funding the well first.”
That will be on property the Richards family already owns.
They’ve had to alter their plans somewhat due to shipping difficulties, but they are still raising funds.
That includes a fundraiser hosted and headlined by WMBD’s Greg Batton on April 2. CLICK HERE to find out more about the Imani Rescue Center.
