WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Peoria City Clerk Mary Haynes is being remembered on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“Mary was a devoted mother and grandmother, and one of the kindest people you could meet,” said Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap). “She was a friend to everyone that knew her.”
LaHood gave a one-minute house floor speech Monday on Haynes, who died at the end of last November at the age of 79.
She was City and Town Clerk from 1985 to 2012.
“For over 25 years, she made local government work better,” said LaHood. “Being the City Clerk was a passion of Mary’s, and she was beloved by her colleagues.”
LaHood says Haynes led the way for transparency in city governments, and taught other city clerks how to do the job right.
