PEORIA, Ill. – If you saw a lot of police activity in certain areas of Peoria Wednesday, Police Chief Eric Echevarria says it was by design.
The chief, in a news release, says as part of his 2022 anti-violence initiative, 60 police officers, U.S. Marshals, state troopers, and others participated in a special detail.
The detail, Echevarria says, resulted in more than 50 traffic stops with citations and warnings being issued.
20 people were arrested, and several illegally-possessed handguns were recovered.
In one case, three juveniles were arrested after giving chase to officers, both on foot, and in an allegedly stolen vehicle.
In another instance, someone who caused a brief standoff after an allegedly stolen vehicle drove recklessly through the city. The driver, ironically, had an outstanding warrant for fleeing and eluding.
The full breakdown of what happened in the detail is below.
