PEORIA, Ill. – Lost in the news of Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell telling the County Board he would not seek another term in next year’s election, the board Tuesday took care of some mandated business.
The board, during a special meeting, unanimously approved a newly-redrawn district map — required because of the 2020 Census. And apparently with not nearly the dissension there was when state-level maps were redrawn.
“It’s good to know we can put people together from different political walks, and come to something agreeable,” said Andrew Rand, County Board Chair (D-Dist. 4). “I appreciate the members of the committee who worked on this project in my absence.”
Rand says he had no hand in drawing the new map, leaving it up to the Redistricting Committee and attorneys.
The 18 districts each should represent about 10,000 of Peoria County’s residents, and takes effect with the November, 2022 election. One County Board member says the board tried to get as much public input on the map as possible.
“I’m…proud that we solicited input from the community — not that we got a lot, but we opened it up a couple different times for the community to give input on it. So, thanks for that,” said Jim Fennell, County Board Vice-Chairman, who also was Vice-Chair of the Redistricting Committee (R-Dist. 13).
