PEORIA, Ill. – Animal adoption fees will go up at Peoria County’s Animal Protective Services facility, but with flexibility that could mean you may not have to pay much more.
The Peoria County Board Thursday approved raising the fees; but, since it was first proposed in the board’s Operations Committee, some wiggle room was added.
“It might allow [PCAPS Director Becky Spencer] to subsidize some of those fees, for people who really can’t afford to get their pets back out,” said District 10 Democrat and Operations Committee Chair Rob Reneau.
The previous proposal didn’t include any flexibility.
“This also gives [Spencer] flexibility because [the ordinance] says ‘up to,’” said District 9 Democrats Kate Pastucha. “She can gague if she’s got more animals than she wants to take care of at the moment, and needs to get them to homes, it allows her some flexibility to decrease the rates as she feels is necessary.
Spencer says otherwise, fees have not kept up with the cost of vaccinations and other supplies. This is the first fee increase since 2010.
