UPDATED 2:15 P.M.
PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Fire crews were called just before 8:30 Wednesday morning to a fire at the Stop & Save store at 800 NE Jefferson, and the owner says he’s suspicious.
Heavy, black was rising from the single-story building when firefighters got to the scene, and appeared to be coming from the eaves of the store. Multiple trucks responded to the fire call.
Fire officials say they believe no one was inside the store at the time of the call. The fire was brought under control in less than a half hour.
The store’s owner tells our news partner 25 News he was reviewing security footage and noticed two people wearing masks trying to pour gas around the outside of the building and setting it on fire less the four hours earlier.
An official cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but it caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.
Traffic was being diverted for a time around the scene, but has since returned to normal.
