SOUTH PEKIN, Ill. – The superintendent says a small fire at South Pekin Grade School that caused the school to be evacuated did minimal damage.
In a Facebook post, Seth Mingus says a small fire late Friday morning started in a closet in a school basement, and was put out quickly.
While Mingus says there is very little fire damage, sections of the rest of the school suffered moderate smoke damage.
A professional service has been hired to clean the school. Mingus says as a result, classes for Monday have been cancelled, and school will resume Tuesday.
“I can’t overstate how proud I am of the SPGS students and staff,” said Mingus. “We always make sure that our students take every drill seriously, and today everyone benefited from years of practice.”
There are believed to be no injuries.
